Communication Skills
Tips for leaders to strengthen communication skills:
Be Present
Set aside time for the conversation, ensure there will be no interruptions, and allow the conversation to be a dialogue rather than a monologue.
Listen for Understanding
Paraphrase to ensure congruity, ask clarifying questions and show interest in the speaker.
Approach with Empathy
Acknowledge the speaker before jumping into the conversation and observe their mood and tone. For example, ask how the person’s day is going before jumping into the topic discussion.
Speak Clearly and Concisely
Pause to gather your thoughts before responding, use plain language, and deploy the “less is more” approach.
Ask for Feedback
Inquire as to whether the conversation was useful or if any further support is needed. Models like Situation, Behavior, Impact (S-B-I) can be useful.
